As the 2012 Komen Houston Race for the Cure® draws closer, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for your generous and continued support. As a two-time, 13-year breast cancer survivor and this year’s Race Chair, I am proud to stand beside you in the fight against breast cancer. Since I formed the Pasadena Independent School District Team as team captain seven years ago, our team has raised $345,000 and we were ranked second in fundraising for the 2011 Race by raising $70,000. As a result, I understand first hand the commitment, support, and importance of team participation. The statistics for the 2011 Komen Houston Race for the Cure show that 85% of the total revenue was from fundraising by teams! As the 2012 Race Chair, my personal goal is to significantly increase the total number of teams, the number of individuals participating in a team, and the total revenue contributed by teams.
Through my experience as a team captain, I contribute our team’s success to the following actions: “think outside the box” for fundraising; provide recognition for breast cancer survivors within your organization; participate in Passionately Pink Fridays for each Friday during the month of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, by collecting $5 for each Friday and having them wear a team, Komen, or pink shirt with jeans; include all members of your organization in all activates, regardless if they register for the Race; create your own Race Page at www.komen-houston.org and copy/paste the link into a general email to send out to friends, relatives, members of your team, churches, etc. so they can easily join your team or make a contribution; and encourage collaboration to generate creative ideas to increase team spirit and revenue.
Even though I have participated in every Race for the last thirteen years, I still experience the same spirit of commitment, compassion, and joyous celebration from the 35,000 plus participants and the several thousand survivors depicted in a huge sea of pink, just as I did for my very first Race in October of 1999! As a survivor, race participant, team captain, and 2012 Race Chair, I feel empowered knowing that we are not alone and that our collective strength and support will one day help us reach our goal to eradicate breast cancer forever. Please join me in articulating and demonstrating our vision, courage, and passion in finding a cure through our team spirit! There is still plenty of time to register or to encourage others to register, so please visit www.komen-houston.org to sign up for the Race on October 6th in Downtown Houston and to join our united effort to raise $4 million to service the seven counties in the Houston area. As a united team, we are the heart and soul of the Race for the Cure! Together, we can keep our team momentum rising to the challenge of making the 2012 Houston Race for the Cure the best ever! Thanks again for your commitment for creating a future without breast cancer!
