Education Outreach Programs Increasing Breast Cancer Awareness in Our Communities

Education Committee The Education Committee assists with the Affiliate's education programming providing breast cancer information to the seven county service area. All committee members are trained and participate in a variety of education programs. New volunteers are always welcome to join the committee. See training schedule below.
Project Pink This is a breast cancer awareness program targeting young females in the high school setting. In partnership with the Young Survival Coalition, this 45-minute presentation includes a breast health speaker, materials and a survivor story, free of charge to the participating school. Service Area Leaders (SALs) This special group of volunteers is dedicated to helping their resident communities by serving as the key Komen representative in their communities. SALs provide their communities with breast health and breast cancer information and brochures, resources and special educational events. All SALs are available to present to your group and attend community events in their service areas. Click here to find your SAL. I AM THE CURE.® This Komen National initiative is intended to increase awareness about breast cancer and educate all Race for the Cure® participants on early detection techniques. This program is ideal for volunteers of all ages seeking the perfect activity at the Race for the Cure®. High school and college students are encouraged to participate as Cure Leaders on Race day to help deliver educational messages throughout the race course and at the education/affiliate booths. Health Fairs and Material Distribution The Affiliate offers breast health and breast cancer materials and equipment for use in our service area. The Education Committee assists in distributing materials to all non-profit organizations/individuals upon request. Click here to request an Education Speaker or Educational Materials from the Komen Houston Affiliate. Please submit the completed form to the Education and Volunteer Manager at lalvarez@komen-houston.org or fax to (713)783-9187. All forms must be completed with at least a six weeks notice. All presentations are free of charge, however, donations are appreciated. Free educational equipment and materials in a variety of languages are provided to non-profit organizations.
Pink Ribbon Home Project Do your part by simply making pink breast cancer awareness ribbons at home and send or drop off at our office. Other Projects & Collaborative Efforts
Breast Health Summit An annual breast health summit hosted by the Breast Health Collaborative of Texas to fill the gaps in breast health services and combine complimentary resources to improve access to care, particularly for low-income and uninsured clients. All breast cancer advocates and health care providers are invited to address these gaps in breast health services.
Community Profile This research project helps the Affiliate identify gaps and barriers in programs and services in our seven county service area with assistance from a public health graduate intern. The data is compiled every two-years and is produced in hard copy as the Community Profile.
Komen on the Go® This Komen National program that engages young women in the breast cancer movement. This touring bus features a mass amount of breast cancer information and hands-on activities. The Affiliate is able to request a tour stop every year. For more information visit http://www.komen.org/.
Knowledge is Beautiful This breast health awareness program targets hair salons in African American communities. (Collaboration with National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer).
