Susan G. Komen® Houston Kicks Off 25th Anniversary

Local Breast Cancer Organization Celebrates 25 Years of Groundbreaking Research, Innovation and Impact

HOUSTON (March 24, 2015) – Susan G. Komen® Houston is thrilled to embark upon a year-long celebration to commemorate its 25th anniversary by hosting its annual Pink Honor Roll dinner, impactful Race for the Cure®, second annual charity Golf Classic and a grand Gala event for the first time in five years.

For the last 25 years, Susan G. Komen® Houston has been privileged to work with the Houston community to raise crucial funds for national breast cancer research and local community programs that offer education, screenings, treatment and support services.  In its 25 year history, Komen Houston has invested over $48 million to over 63funded partners to provide services to assist at risk, underserved and uninsured men and women throughout Houston and the seven county area it serves.

Of each dollar raised by Komen Houston, 75 cents stays in the greater Houston community and the remaining 25 cents supports research efforts on a national level, which often comes back to Houston for cutting edge research being conducted by Komen Funded Scholars in the city’s incredible Texas Medical Center.

The first of its 25th year celebrations, the annual Pink Honor Roll dinner celebrates and honors those who have helped make these grants a reality. On April 2 Komen Houston will host the annual Pink Honor Roll Celebration and thank them for their support in the fight against breast cancer.  This event is underwritten by The Houstonian Hotel and celebrates the top 100 fundraisers of Race For The Cure®.  This esteemed group of individuals raised an astounding $562,500 for last year’s Race season.

On October 31st the organization will host the city’s largest footrace and fundraising event of the year.  The 25th annual Susan G. Komen Houston Race For The Cure® will take place at Sam Houston Park in Downtown Houston, chaired by Besty Kamin, Managing Partner of Strasburger & Price. This year’s Race has the potential to be bigger and better than ever, celebrating all that Komen Houston, alongside its funded partners and the medical and research community, has accomplished in the last 25 years, from vital medical advancements and breakthroughs to raising awareness and much needed funds with the ultimate goal of ending breast cancer forever.

Following the success of its inaugural charity Golf Classic, Komen Houston will host the event again on November 16 at the renowned Champions Golf Club and it will be chaired by Tammy Howell. Complete with an exciting pink ball drop, the second annual Golf Classic is yet another opportunity that will raise awareness about men and

breast cancer while also raising funds to provide screening and treatment support.

The celebratory year will end on a high note with an elegant Anniversary Gala event, chaired by, Judy and Glenn Smith and Jane and Ed Parker, on February 20, 2016, thanking and honoring all of the individuals, sponsors, partners, volunteers and funded partners who have made the last 25 years of Komen Houston possible, and who have contributed so much in the fight against this disease.
