OCTOBER IS NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH, AND IT'S SOMETHING THAT'S REALLY IMPACTED ALL OF US IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. JOINING US THIS MORNING IS KRISTEN BARLEY. WE WERE JUST TALKING ABOUT YOUR STORY. LET'S REWIND A LITTLE BIT. TALK TO ME ABOUT YOUR STORY.

WELL, IN 2008, I WAS 34 YEARS OLD AND JUST LIVING MY LIFE AND FOUND A LUMP FROM A SELF-BREAST EXAM AND THEN FOLLOWED UP WITH MY DOCTOR AND RECEIVED THE NEWS OF STAGE 3 BREAST CANCER. AND SO AT THAT TIME, YOU BEING SO YOUNG, 34, WERE YOU IMMEDIATELY ALARMED? WERE YOU A LITTLE NERVOUS? I KNOW SOMEONE IN YOUR FAMILY HAD BREAST CANCER AND SURVIVED IS. MY MOTHER HAD JUST BEEN A TWO-YEAR SURVIVOR SO I KIND OF KNEW WHAT TO EXPECT, SO I GOT UNDER HER DOCTOR'S CARE, AND FROM THERE, TREATMENT STARTED, AND HERE I AM SIX YEARS LATER. DID IT GIVE YOU A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON LIFE? IT DOES. IT MAKES EVERY DAY COUNT AND THOSE LITTLE AANNOYANCES, THEY JUST DON'T MATTER ANYMORE, SO YOUR THINKING BECOMES REALLY CLEAR AND ALL YOU WANT TO DO IS SURVIVE AND SO THROUGH MY TREATMENTS AND MY DOCTORS, I SURVIVED. I CAN SEE THE LIGHT SHINING THROUGH YOU. BEAUTIFUL SMILE. IT WAS A GOAL OF YOURS TO RAISE FOR THE CURE. TALK TO ME ABOUT THAT. YO *UT TO GET STRONG ENOUGH TO DO THAT.

I STARTED MY TREATMENTS IMMEDIATELY IN MARCH OF 2008 AND I JUST WANTED TO BE WELL ENOUGH TO RACE IN OCTOBER, SO MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY RALLIED AROUND ME AND I RACED THAT YEAR. GOING THROUGH THE RACE, WAS IT ONLY YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY THAT YOU SAW CHEERING YOU ON, IT WAS REALLY THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY COMING TOGETHER FOR THE CAUSE. THERE'S AT LEAST 20,000 PEOPLE OUT THERE, SO THEY'RE ALL SUPPORTING YOU, THEY'RE SURVIVORS, THERE'S PEOPLE GOING THROUGH TREATMENT LIKE MYSELF. I HAD JUST FINISHED MY CHEMOO TREATMENTS AND I WAS ABOUT TO ENTER INTO MY SURGERIES AND GET RADIATION AFTER, SO I WAS IN THE MIDDLE. ONE OF MY GOALS, AND IT WAS AMAZING TO HAVE 20,000 PEOPLE SUPPORTING YOU, AND ALL WALKING TO END BREAST CANCER. AND SO IS ARE THERE ANY DETAILS ABOUT THE RACE COMING UP THIS YEAR? WE HAD IT OCTOBER 4th, IT WAS A GREAT SUCCESS, SO WE'RE JUST STILL RAISING MONEY THROUGH DECEMBER. OKAY. EXCELLENT, KRISTEN, THANK YOU FOR JOINING US. REALLY APPRECIATE IT.
