Twenty-five years ago, Nancy G. Brinker (pictured on right) promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise launched the global breast cancer movement and the creation of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, now known as the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Our new name and new logo symbolizes our renewed urgency and commitment to finally, once and for all, finish what we started by ending breast cancer forever. The Komen organization as a whole has invested nearly $1.5 billion to fulfill their promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
The mission of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.
Without a cure, 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will continue to be diagnosed with breast cancer. Without a cure, an estimated 5 million Americans will be diagnosed with breast cancer - and more than 1 million could die - over the next 25 years. Without a cure, an estimated 25 million women around the world will be diagnosed with breast cancer - and 10 million could die - over the next 25 years.
The Komen Houston Affiliate was established in 1991 with a small group of survivors and activists. Today, we have more than 1,300 volunteers committed to saving lives, empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures. In the seven county area we serve, the Komen Houston Affiliate has given more than $22 million to help fight this disease and an additional $7 million for breast cancer research.
The Komen Houston Race for the Cure® is the largest foot race in Houston and each year continues to grow with more than 32,000 participants attending in 2009. Other fund-raising events include the Pink Tie Gala and the Pink Ribbon Reception, both held in the spring. |
