This year, Joan ranked #42 on the 2015 Pink Honor Roll for his phenomenal fundraising efforts in raising $3,715 to support Komen Houston’s mission – to save lives and end breast cancer forever.
“Like everyone else I want to see an end to cancers of all makes and modes, but being a breast cancer survivor I have chosen to channel my efforts in that direction. I fight so that a cure can be found. Just in the years I've been involved, I've seen many advances, but it’s still not enough. I'm hoping to see the cure come in my lifetime.” says Joan.
Joan has been involved with Susan G. Komen® Houston for over 13 years. Every year, she walks as a survivor, but also walks in memory of a good friend, Yolanda Johnson, who was not as blessed as Joan was in her outcome. Yolanda's cancer was very aggressive and although she fought a good fight, she passed away in 2009 just days after her 45th birthday. She never got to meet her granddaughter who was born on Yolanda's birthday some six years later.
“I want to be sure my granddaughter, nieces, sisters, friends and also my son do not have to deal with the diagnosis of breast cancer.” shares Joan.
