This year’s Komen Houston Race for the Cure® Chair is Dr. Karen Holt, a two-time, 13 year, breast cancer survivor and dedicated volunteer for the Houston Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Dr. Karen Holt has served as a spokeswoman for Komen Houston and led the Pasadena Independent School District to become the second highest contributing team for the Komen Houston Race for the Cure® in 2011. In the past seven years, Holt’s leadership has helped raise $345,000 for Komen and earned her fourth place in the Pink Honor Roll Top 10 for personal contributions.
Karen feels that it’s her personal responsibility as a breast cancer survivor to share her story and experience battling breast cancer with the community in an effort to provide breast cancer education and to inspire others to raise money to eradicate this disease forever. Since diagnosed, her goal is to make a difference in the world by delivering a message of hope and survival in changing personal tragedies into triumphant celebrations. Karen’s purpose, passion, and mission in life is to inspire breast cancer survivors to persevere and never give up on finding a cure. The last 13 years of her life prove what a difference one person can make.
Dr. Holt has also excelled throughout her 37 years in the education field, both in administration and as an adjunct professor. She earned her Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education and her Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Houston and then her doctorate in Education in Administration from Columbia University’s Teachers College. Holt has received a variety of awards throughout her career including the National Distinguish Principal of Texas award. Dr. Holt recently retired from the Pasadena Independent School District but continues her passion for education with Komen and encourages others to make a positive difference.
Dr. Holt is a proud mother of two children, Ryan and Ashley, and enjoys spending time with her two grandsons, Brandon and Austin.
