Susan G. Komen® Houston Funds Patient Transportation Program at American Cancer Society
For many breast cancer patients, finding transportation to and from doctor appointments can be an emotional, physical and financial struggle.
Tatiana, a 46-year-old mother and grandmother, was diagnosed in January 2012 with stage IV breast cancer. With no insurance and limited resources, she felt like a walking death sentence. That was until she discovered the Patient Transportation Program.
“The American Cancer Society’s transportation program was a lifesaver,” Tatiana says. “It gave me peace of mind knowing that I had a way to get to and from treatment.”
Komen Houston granted $150,600 to fund the Patient Transportation Program in 2013 as a result of a community needs assessment that revealed transportation as a barrier to care for many throughout Houston. Through the grant, patients will receive 3,012 free one-way rides to and from doctor appointments and treatment, which can increase the number of patients that complete their breast cancer treatment.
The Patient Transportation Program helps prevent delayed or skipped breast cancer treatment due to a lack of transportation. With the help of Greater Houston Transportation Company and Road to Recovery volunteers, the program offers transportation to under-served breast cancer patients in six Houston-area counties.
“Cancer patients often have multiple treatments a day for weeks at a time and it is even harder for disadvantaged patients with limited transportation to get to their medical appointments,” Ginny Thompson Kirklin, Komen Houston mission director, says. “Every year, Komen Houston funds local projects like the Patient Transportation Program and each one plays such a vital role from breast cancer screening to treatment to survivorship.”
Susan G. Komen® Houston believes that nothing should stand in the way of getting to treatment. With an investment of more than $45 million in breast cancer education, screening and treatment projects, they are putting the money to work throughout Houston for those who need it most.
