I first got involved with Komen through my sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha. Our national philanthropy supports Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and breast cancer education and research… little did I know that my mother would be diagnosed with breast cancer that same year. It was fate that I chose an organization that was passionate about helping a cause that hit so close to home for me. After graduating college I moved back to Houston and interned with the Komen Houston Affiliate.
I know firsthand how comforting the support of people is during your time of worry when someone so close to you doubts their health. But to see the love, faith, compassion and determination of so many people fighting for one cause really touched my heart. To be a part of such an important cause on a daily basis was fulfilling knowing that my job was touching other people’s lives.
My mother was re-diagnosed in January 2012 but I am happy to say she is cancer FREE!!! I not only volunteer my time because of my mother, but because of every other mother, sister, wife, friend, and daughter who is, has and will be affected by this horrible disease.
